Having recently started a nonprofit to collect unwanted but only gently used furniture for people in need, I have been struck by the lack of responsibility that people take for their own objects. Once they decide they don't want it anymore it becomes garbage and not their problem. I think that ownership of something needs to start when you're shopping for it and it doesn't end until 1) you are dead or 2) you've given it to a new home and not dumped it in landfill or left it on the sidewalk.
