What is this about?

This newsletter is dedicated to exploring furniture waste through systems thinking, storytelling from the bottom up, and using humor as often as I can. My aim is to get people to shift how they think about used furniture--a counter reaction to the ubiquity of the urban blight narrative. Instead of waste that needs to be disposed of, why can't it be a catalyst to support a thriving local economy for artists, skilled labor (upholsterers, wood refinishers), small businesses and others? I argue we don’t have a waste problem, but lack imagination, investment, and infrastructure.

Furniturecycle was born out of a passion project that chronicled over 50,000 pounds of discarded street furniture in my Oakland, CA neighborhood in just 15 months, and is rooted in my lived experience working at the bottom of the furniture supply chain.
